2011 Costume Institute Gala 'Met Ball'

Last night saw fashion's finest flock to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Costume Institute Gala.

This years event paid tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, with hordes of A-list celebrities taking to the red carpet to pose for the waiting paparazzi.

Host of the Vogue-sponsored party was Anna Wintour, who shone in a sequined Chanel gown from the Spring/Summer Haute Couture collection alongside daughter Bee Shaffer.

Red was a theme of the evening, with a host of stars sporting red dresses in shades from cherry to burgundy.

It was a fashion face-off for Glee beauties Dianna Agron and Lea Michele, who both took to the carpet in bright red gowns. Lea opted for a tight-fitting Escada design, whilst Dianna chose an elegant Michael Kors creation accessorised with a simple cuff and an updo.

Gisele Bunchen

But it was Gisele Bundchen who really stole the limelight in a gorgeous red floor length, a-line gown with bustier detailing from Alexander McQueen's Autumn/Winter 2005 collection.

Rihanna on the red carpet
Rihanna also wowed the crowds when she arrived in a sexy lace design dress by Stella McCartney with see-through detailing and strappy Christian Louboutin platforms, accesorised with her red hair styled into side braid.

Leighton Meester (left) and Blake Lively
Another fashion face-off came in the form of gossip girl co-stars Leighton Meester and Blake Lively. Whilst Leighton opted for a mid-length strapless cage-design dress by Louis Vuitton with matching heels and a long sleek ponytail. Blake chose a dramatically different design by Chanel Couture, with one shoulder and a sheer mesh silver pailette. Whilst both girls wowed in each of their looks, I have to say I slightly favour Blake's dress which oozes pure Hollywood glamour.

The best of the rest. From left: Ashley Greene, Diane Kruger, Taylor Swift, Liz Hurley & Thandie Newton
